  Ascension apprehension
11.23.1999 5:48pm, Nok

Desslock, prolific RPG maven, has apparently been playing a copy Ultima IX: Ascension for several days now and has posted his initial impressions along with some hi-rez screenshots. Unfortunately, his early experiences with the game are a mixed bag. While he affirms that this is definitely 'an Ultima' in the sense that the world is large, detailed, and interactive, he also finds serious fault with the game's AI and various technical issues. While he's quick to point out that these are only quick assessments after a short time playing, he does state that it is clear that the game will not impress everyone. =( Stay tuned for more details as things unfold.

And speaking of U9, Auric's Ultima Moongates has posted the final two of fifteen Lord British Audio Clips. These last two deal with dungeoneering and how the Moongates will work in the game. Definitely worth a look if you, like me, are savoring every new bit of U9 info to hit the 'net.

The wait draws to a close

Ultima IX: Ascension will soon be mine! Muwahahah!!! They finally updated my pre-order information. Unless I'm way down in the list of orders to be filled, it is conceivable that I will have U9 in my hands before the end of the week. I was trying not to get my hopes up too high about this possibility, but I failed. I'm roasting in my own anticipation. I'm all giddy at the chance that I will have to duck out of Thanksgiving dinner early to go play Ultima. U9, for pete's sake! Ultima freakin' IX!

Okay, you can tell I've been waiting for this game for a while, can't you?

All's quiet on the front -Happy b-day, sis!

Well, shoot. Been a few days since I made an update, and I apologize for that. But y'know... there just wasn't a whole lot of news. Oh, there were a few preview/reviews of some games, but nothing terribly interesting or new. At least nothing you can't find in other articles I've linked to recently.

But you came here for content, so I'll not send you away unhappy. You can at least go listen to the next few Lord British audio-clips over on Auric's Ultima Moongates.or here on WEWP!. And there's some decent reading over on the semimonthly RPG Mythology column from the boys of Bioware over on GA-RPG. And if you're curious, the Nox Homepage has been redesigned and contains some new content. And if you want to read about a game you'll be waiting a while for, you can check out the IGN PC interview with designers of a newly announced MMORPG, simply and effectively titled Big World.

Hopefully, there will be some good stories soon for us to report on. But right now, all seems quiet on the RPG front. So until then, why not go play a few levels of Diablo or something just for old time's sake.

  Can you feel the excitement?

As promised, the UIX Countdown continues with only 5 days left before the estimated release date of U9. Today brings us four new RealAudio clips of Lord British describing various aspects of the game, this time focusing mainly on the music in the game. Once again, these clips are courtesy of Auric's Ultima Moongates. You can access all the clips directly on this page over on Moongates.

And while you're there, be sure to check out Auric's new Ultima Easter Eggs section. Although there's not much there now, this database-driven page will eventually hold a complete collection of all the hidden goodies and inside jokes sprinkled throughout the Ultima series. I say 'eventually' because the page is driven by user submissions... so if you know of a good easter egg, you should definitely add it to the list. I, myself, submitted one today from Ultima VI where you could find a crashed Kilrathi spaceship from the Wing Commander series in a farmer's field.

I saw over on Bluesnews that Thief2-MetalAge.com has posted a new mega-interview with 10 different designers working on Thief 2 (no official homepage yet, I believe), the upcoming sequel to the 3D first-person RPG, Thief. It's a nice offbeat interview of the type we like here at Swordplay.net. It's broken up by individual question (some of which are pretty wacky) and then each of the designers are given a chance to answer in their own words. Give it a read here.

I received the following letter today from Interplay regarding the release of Planescape: Torment:

* An Advanced Dungeons & Dragons single player fantasy roleplaying game, set in TSR's Planescape campaign setting
* Throughout the game your character adapts to fit your own personal gaming style

* You can regenerate, speak to the dead and have magical immunities... You're a power to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, so is everyone else!
* Built with the Bioware Infinity Engine, the same game engine used in Baldur's Gate

Mere words cannot express how unique and amazing this game is. You need to see this for yourself... go now and take a look at the colorful screen shots and download the movie that was shown at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. This game is destined to be remembered as the next evolution in RPG adventure.

Okay, the letter is a bit heavy on the superlatives and also on the repetition and the repetitiveness. But, wow... Planescape will be out December 3rd! Can't complain about that!

As part of the recent clamor of excitement surrounding the imminent release of Ultima IX: Ascension, the gang over at WEWP Entertainment have launched their UIX Countdown. They have a collection of features including coverage of the trip to Origin headquarters which several webmasters recently took, with more goodies planned for the upcoming week prior to U9's release. Of particular note are links to two audio sessions with Lord British posted by Auric of Auric's Ultima Moongates. In them, you can hear the King himself waxing nostalgic on his earliest days of programming.

Matthias Worch, Level Designer for Legend Entertainment has just updated his homepage with the second part of a strategy guide for their new Wheel of Time game. And he should know what he's talking about since he's been working on the game for some time now. If blasting Trollocs with Balefire and collecting Seals on the Dark One's Prison with magic angreals is your thing, then check it out here.

Electric Playground, a new name on these pages, today posted a feature entitled What's up with Bioware? They take a look at the three big titles in development by this software house which rocked the world last year with their magnum opus Baldur's Gate. The games previewed are Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, MDK2, and Neverwinter Nights. Nothing terribly new or exciting in these previews, but they take a nice analytical look at how Bioware approaches a project and how they strive to set themselves a part. And plus, the author never lets them forget their Canadian roots. Anyway, give the article a read here.

I saw some very sad news tonight over on Desslock's. Teresa Potts, former PR Rep at Origin and wife to Ultima Online Producer Starr Long has recently passed away. Her voice was a key link between the designers and fans of the Ultima series for many years. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her friends and family in their time of grief.

  The Tuesday fare

Right on schedule, Blizzard has released a new Diablo II Screenshot of the Week. This one, for the first time anywhere, shows a Guildhouse. These buildings will be available to guilds, clans, tribes, houses, families, covens, sects, and fellowships, or anyone else who can pool the gold to buy one. They will provide common storage space for members, as well as a place to just hang out and party. As usual, you can turn to DiabloII.net for the full analysis.

And speaking of Diablo II, this month's choice for the D2 Fan-site Interview is The Sightless Eye. They take the opportunity to query Bill Roper about several specific topics including map editors, network spawning, and the proposed ranking system. Check it out here.

I forgot to mention yesterday that a demo for the Wheel of Time game was released over the weekend. This 77 MB extravaganza contains two single player levels, a multiplayer arena, and a small hub to tie it all together. I played it for a bit and was very impressed by the simply beautiful architecture surrounding the player at every turn. The tasks and spells may be a little flat by current standards, but I didn't really notice while wandering around and looking around at everything and bashing truly spooky monsters. Well, certainly at least every Robert Jordan fan in the world will want to check it out. Check the game's official site for a list of download locations.

I apologize to everyone who has been checking us for updates over the past few days. Due to unforeseen problems, we were unable to post any news. A router died, the server reached capacity, my DSL line went dead, DNS was all messed up, and chipmunks were chewing on some vital Internet wires down in Topeka, Kansas. I swear it's all true!

Okay, actually none of that was true. Well, the part about there being unforeseen problems was true. The problem was that Rao came to visit me here in New York City with our good friend Tykin... and, er, we were just too busy partying, deathmatching, and doing touristy stuff to get any work done. There, now you know the real truth. I feel better with that off my chest. =P

It was good to finally meet The Legendary Hero, Raolin Darksbane, face to face and get the chance to discuss Swordplay.net in person. We share most of the same ideas about where we want to take this site. We both feel that there are just an awful lot of cookie-cutter gaming websites out there. You know what I mean, you've seen them. They've got their news up front, a banner ad or two, then some large and flashy links to a feature or three -- usually a (p)review of the game du jour. And then these features are mostly just paraphrased versions of what can be found on the game's website or other sites devoted to the game, illustrated with publicly available sceenshots. There are definitely quite a few sites that don't follow this mold, or at least do so with a little class, but the rest are a dime a dozen. We don't ever wish to turn into such a site. Why should we race through a game and bust our collective humps to speed a review out the door when you, the informed reader, can read the exact same thing a dozen other places?

So where does that put us? Well, there's an old saying.... "You can wound a room full of zombies with Charged Bolt, or you can kill one dead with Lightning". Wise words there. Rather than try to do everything at once, we want to do one thing and do it well. And for us, that one thing is news. Both Rao and I love to just talk about whatever is new and interesting in the gaming industry. What's fun, what's not? What's a fad, what's here to stay? What new innovations are exciting, what old ones teach us lessons? Which companies know how to go about making a game, and which have their heads up their fiscal assets? Bringing the answers to these questions is something we know we can do very well. And it's something that no other site that I've found really does on a daily basis for the world of RPG gaming. Sure, the 3D Action gamers have Bluesnews to serve this purpose for them. We aspire to one day make Swordplay.net the equivalent for the world of RPG and Sword & Sorcery games. Lofty goals, I know... but if one does not set his aim high, the mark he hits won't impress anyone.

Here's a brief recap of the most interesting news from this past weekend:

  • Everyone seems all aflutter over the postponement of Diablo II. There are plenty of nasty sentiments reflected for all the world to see on the official Battle.net Diablo II Suggestion Forum and other public soapboxes around the 'net. But as is usually the case with a delayed game, most of the posts come from the most frustrated and vocal segment of the game's community. It's understandable that some feel such angst after building up their excitement for so long, only to be told they must continue to wait. However there is a also a large portion of gamers content to just wait and let the artists at Blizzard take their time to make the best game possible. Now while there's nothing particularly new about this, I think it bears following since many eyes in the industry are on the development process of this game. How this plays out may affect the scheduling and public relation strategies of the next generation of games. After all, this is Diablo II... the recipe and precedent for reshaping the entire industry is there.

  • Anticipation for the imminent release of Ultima IX: Ascension continues. The most salient new information comes from several sites which had the opportunity to visit the Origin offices in person, meet the design team, and check out the full game. Here's two write-ups of the experience: one here at Ultima IX Horizons, and the other up on Adrenaline Vault.

  • Lastly, who can deny the gathering clouds of what will one day become the storm that is Baldur's Gate II? If this is up your alley, then I strongly recommend checking out the Baldur's Gate Chronicles site. So far they have been doing an admirable job collating all the scraps of information floating around on the ephemeral digital interchange we like to call the Internet.

So again, I apologize for not keeping up with the news over the past few days, but keep looking to us to provide you with all the pertinent news about your favorite games!

  Patience, young ones...

Well, some have been saying it was inevitable, but the official announcement was finally made today by Blizzard. Diablo II has been delayed. =( They are now projecting an early 2000 release date, but they still hope to begin the Beta before the end of the year. Here is the full announcement:

"November 11, 1999

The release date of Diablo II has been the subject of great speculation in recent weeks as the result of delays in starting the beta test. After discussing the time needed to fully play-balance, polish, beta test and debug the game, we feel that it is important to let the gaming community know that we do not expect to release Diablo II before the end of the year.

Diablo II is the most ambitious project we have undertaken to date. The game is many times larger than the original with a much more complex system of character development. Additionally, we have redesigned the Battle.net architecture using a client-server network to prevent cheating and to expand the multiplayer component. With the release of Diablo II, Battle.net will be a true global network with servers in Europe and Asia to support players around the world.

While we appreciate that Diablo II is highly anticipated by many gamers, we also know that gamers have come to expect a high level of quality from Blizzard products. We have worked hard for many years building this trust, and, as we have promised before, will not take development shortcuts at the expense of disappointing our customers.

The game is now slated for a worldwide release in early 2000. We plan to start beta testing before the year's end with a limited beta test of 1,000 players. We then will conduct an open beta program to stress test our new Battle.net servers. We will keep you updated on the game's progress once the beta test gets underway.

Over the years, we have been praised by the industry for taking our time with games and never losing focus on the attention to detail we pay to every aspect of our titles. As the team continues to work extraordinary hours to deliver the best experience possible, we hope that this tradition of support continues.

Best Regards,
Susan Wooley
Public Relations Director
Blizzard Entertainment"

What can I say. Ms. Wooley is absolutely right in saying that Blizzard has always been praised for taking their time to make games perfect. In fact, there has never been a game released by them which has shipped even close to it's original estimated release date. But the finished product has always been superb. I have little doubt that Diablo II will be no exception.

  It's for real!

It's official! Interplay has officially announced that they are developing Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. Accordingly, they have also opened up a brand new website with several early and unpolished screenshots, concept art sketches, and a very lengthy and informative FAQ. Additionally, there are three inactive message boards which are slated to go live tomorrow. Here is the full announcement up on the main page:

"11.10.99
Welcome,

Black Isle Studios and BioWare Corp are proud to announce the development of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. We have been working on this title under wraps for some time now. As you can probably imagine, we are very pleased to be able to show you the next installment in the Baldur's Gate saga.

We have been working closely with Wizards of the Coast and TSR to ensure that this second installment in the Baldur's Gate series is as rich in Forgotten Realms lore and history as possible. Our writers and designers have created a story with far more depth and intrigue than was previously seen in Baldur's Gate. The intricacies of the quests and the complexity of the game world has been increased dramatically from the original, creating a gaming richness that will win over the seasoned adventurer as well as the newcomer to the series.

Improvements to the Baldur's Gate engine make the game even more rich and immersive, as well as increasing the realism, depth, and beauty of the world. Our monsters are bigger and have more animation, the spells are more stunning, our environments are more varied to ensure the overall look of the game is amazing. Gameplay improvements such as fixes to pathing, better journal management, and various tweaks to the multiplayer game should greatly increase the experience for all players.

We are hoping that with Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, we can take everything that made Baldur's Gate a great game, fix those things that were frustrating, increase the depth and look of the game, and give our fans everything they want in a CRPG.

Chris Parker
Producer, Black Isle Studios

Ben Smedstad
Producer, Bioware Corp"

Well, all right!

Gamespot has posted a new ten-page preview of Ultima IX: Ascension. No new information, but it's a decent in-depth look at what's known so far. Check it out here. Thanks to The Vault Network for the heads up.

  The boys of Bioware

The Baldur's Gate Chronicles website recently posted an interesting interview with Icewind Dale Producer Chris Parker, and Animator Pete Meihuizen. The interview mainly focuses on innovations made to the game and to the Bioware's Infinity Engine which they used to create the seminal Baldur's Gate. There is also a fair amount of retrospective on the choices made while designing BG and how they have played out. Read all about it here.

And speaking of Baldur's Gate... the Adrenaline Vault has posted a very interesting rumor which bears repeating in its fullness:

"The Adrenaline Vault has learned that Interplay will be officially announcing the sequel to the one of the most renowned role-playing games of all time, Baldur’s Gate, at a press event tonight. This will be no small affair; the press will be receiving screenshots, game details, game time and leaving with a playable demo. In other words, stay tuned for a slew of Baldur’s Gate 2 images and information tonight and in the coming days based on hands-on experience. More details will be online tonight immediately following the event."

A Baldur's Gate 2 announcement soon? We'll be on top of dat!
