Day of Atonement

October 13th, 2005

It’s Yom Kippur, and thus I’m home. I’m not going to temple or fasting or anything. Things have been going at pretty much breakneck speed for a while at work, so I’m just enjoying the day off.

I think we’re going to go out and see Corpse Bride a little later. The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my all-time favorite movies, so this has a lot to live up to.

I will likely also be playing a lot of WoW today. I’ve hardly played at all since before the summer. I think I just needed a break. But the latest patch has drawn me back in. My Tauren Druid just hit level 56 last night. I’m in the home stretch!

Shana Tovah

October 5th, 2005

Happy New Year to all the Semites in da house.

I had a pretty placid couple of days home from work. I got a new cell phone, replaced a blown power supply in my main PC, and ate some good deli.

I also finally got to see Serenity over the weekend. I highly recommend it to fans of the TV show Firefly. And for those who aren’t fans of the show, I highly recommend running out and getting the DVD’s to rectify that particular shortcoming.

Well, it’s back to work tomorrow. Should be a busy couple weeks coming up, unfortunately. I will be administering an SAT, a PSAT, and an ACT exam for hundreds of kids. Any one of these is no sweat by themselves, but back to back to back is a little much. Mainly just a lot of tedious details to keep track of and nervous parents and kids to assuage. The fun never stops!

Sunday at the Faire

October 2nd, 2005

I spent the afternoon at the Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park. It’s an annual event that takes place about seven blocks from my house in one of the most picturesque parks in Manhattan. There was the usual assortment of vendors, minstrels, sword fights, and jousting. And of course, the LARP‘ers were out in full force (and full costume).

God, I love seeing so many people unashamed of their own unbridled geekiness. To put on a full body costume and walk the streets of New York as a wizard, knight, or tavern wench takes a certain brand of courage I probably will never have. And at the same time I can’t help but cringe a little. Most folks are just there to get their freak on and have a good time. But there are always a few who you just know are going overboard with the whole thing.

Well, I still love it. Though my wife, I think, has a more typical attitude: “I guess I can put up with it once per year.”

Back to Basics

May 28th, 2005

My main system hard drive failed. I kinda knew it was coming since I’d been hearing clicking noises for a while now. So for once, I was almost completely backed-up.

I ordered a new 80gig SATA drive for $60. Should be here after the long weekend. Until then, I’m on a barebones WinXP install using an old drive I had lying around. The only programs I have on here is an antivirus app, firewall, FireFox, and World of Warcraft. I’m such a junkie.

Biggest Day Ever?

May 20th, 2005

So here is my new blog. I’ve started blogging about 4 or 5 times in the past, but it never really got off the ground. Honestly, I think I just enjoyed experimenting with different blog software and tweaking more than actually writing posts. But hopefully I’ll stick with it this time.

And I think this is an appropriate day to start. I just got the biggest news ever. My wife is pregnant with our first child! I haven’t even really begun to process this yet. I feel simultaneously elated and terrified. We’ve been trying for a while, and it was starting to seem like it might never happen. So I can’t quite believe it.

Of course, this means that I won’t be telling anyone about this blog for a while. We’ve decided to keep the news a secret from everyone except our closest relatives. But I frankly feel it’s more important to get into the habit of putting my thoughts into words than it is to actually have people read them. And these early posts will still be here once we go public.

The other thing that makes this a big day, is that I just saw Episode III. And to my utter shock and amazement, it did not suck. I was really disappointed by the first two prequels, and I went in to Ep3 fearing the worst. But not only did it fail to suck, but I think I actually enjoyed it! I’m not certain, though… I’ll have to watch it 5 or 6 more times to be sure. I came out of the theater wishing that Lucas had stretched this story into three films rather than subjecting us to two braindead stinkfests.

Now, I find it humorous that I should finally see Episode III and it ends up being not the most exciting thing to happen to me today. I mean, my whole life has been spent as a serious connoisseur of good sci-fi. Star Wars especially. I grew up with it. I spent my younger years pretending to be Luke Skywalker until I got older and realized how much cooler Han Solo was. And Episode III is the culmination of that particular thread of my life. Likely, it’s the last new Star Wars film I will ever see on the big screen. I really feel as if one chapter of my life has closed at the same moment another one begins. One of the most important features of my childhood landscape has come to its conclusion on the same day that I learn about what will no doubt become the most important part of adulthood.

Freakin’ craziness!
